Jönköping host the Human Rights Days 2027

The Human Rights Days, the Nordic region’s largest forum for debate and discussion on human rights, will be held in Jönköping in 2027. Jönköping University (JU) is one of the local hosts, alongside several other organizations in the region.

The conference is held annually in different cities across Sweden and brings together researchers, practitioners, decision-makers, and civil society. The aim is to highlight human rights issues and disseminate knowledge and methods for putting these rights into practice – locally, nationally, and internationally.

“It is very significant for Jönköping University to collaborate on hosting the Human Rights Days. As an institution of higher education, we have a responsibility to contribute to knowledge, dialogue, and critical reflection on democracy, human rights, and the equal value of all people. When academia, civil society, and public sector actors come together, important opportunities are created to jointly strengthen a sustainable and inclusive society, says Catherine Legrand, Dean and Managing Director of the School of Health and Welfare as well as Vice President for Sustainability at Jönköping University.

Collaborating with local partners

The Human Rights Days conference is initiated and organized by civil society, with the Ordfront Association acting as project lead. Ahead of the 2027 conference, Jönköping University is collaborating with Jönköping Municipality, Region Jönköping County, the County Administrative Board of Jönköping County and the Jönköping Parish of the Church of Sweden.

“Hosting the Human Rights Days in Jönköping is both an honour and a significant undertaking. It gives us the opportunity to strengthen our work towards a society based on respect, participation and the equal value of all people,” says Mona Forsberg (S), Chair of the Municipal Executive Board.

Back to Jönköping – with a renewed focus

The Human Rights Days were last held in Jönköping in 2017, which helped to strengthen human rights work in the region at the time.

“It’s absolutely brilliant that the Human Rights Days are being held in Jönköping again. When the conference was here in 2017, it gave a real boost to the work in our county. Now it’s the 10th anniversary and we hope it will further strengthen the work,” says Brittis Benzler, County Governor of Jönköping County.

The organizer is also looking forward to returning to Jönköping and Elmia.

“The Human Rights Days in 2017 were a much-appreciated event with strong local engagement. We hope to make at least as big an impact in 2027,” says Anna Wigenmark, Secretary-General of the Ordfront association.

She emphasizes that the conference is an important meeting place for everyone who works with or is interested in human rights.

“Practitioners, researchers, government bodies, local authorities, businesses, civil society, and rights holders all come here. It usually leads to many important discussions and new collaborations. Strong local engagement is a key factor in ensuring a relevant and topical programme,” says Anna Wigenmark.
