Jönköping University launches major reading initiative

Jönköping University’s (JU) literary initiative, JU Reads, is getting underway, with a grand launch event on 3 September. Author Lydia Sandgren will take part in a discussion alongside Albert Bonnier, publisher and co-owner of Bonnier AB. The initiative is supported by the Bonnier Family Foundation and the Hamrin Foundation. Welcome to the University library!

From the autumn term of 2026, students at Jönköping University can sign up for JU Reads, a new initiative that promotes understanding, empathy, and critical thinking through reading and discussion. The concept is based on JU’s People First vision and aims to strengthen students’ general knowledge, capacity for reflection, and understanding of complex social issues.

In small book groups, students will develop and deepen both their personal and professional skills. In autumn 2026, JU Reads will be reading Educated by Tara Westover and A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid. The project is made possible thanks to partnerships with the Bonniers Family Foundation and the Hamrin Foundation.

Launch event on 3 September

On 3 September at 15:00-16:00 in the JMW Hall at the library, a launch event will be held where students, staff and the general public are invited to a social gathering and an exciting author talk with Lydia Sandgren and Albert Bonnier. Lydia Sandgren is a Swedish author and winner of the 2020 August Prize, known for her acclaimed novels Samlade Verk and Artens överlevnad. Also participating are Måns Svensson, President of JU, Thomas Winman, Vice President for Education at JU; and Fredrik Ebefors, manager for JU Reads and incoming Library Director.
