If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and wish to conduct research in Sweden, you may need a residence permit for research depending on the circumstances and duration of your stay.

To apply for a residence permit for research, you must:

  • Have a valid passport.
  • Have a hosting agreement with an approved research principal in Sweden.

If you have been admitted to doctoral studies and have a hosting agreement with an approved research principal, you may also qualify for a residence permit for research. For more information about residence permits for doctoral studies, see [Residence permit for doctoral studies].

If you are going to conduct research in Sweden for less than three months, you do not need a residence permit for research. However, citizens of certain countries may still need a visa to enter Sweden.

You apply for the residence permit yourself and submit the required information and documents to the Swedish Migration Agency.
