The employee and the employer each have specific responsibilities in the process of applying for a work permit with the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).

To apply for a work permit, you must have an employment offer in Sweden. In most cases, the employer must have advertised the position in Sweden, the EU/EEA and Switzerland for at least ten days before the employment offer is made.

The employer in Sweden starts the work permit application by providing information about the employment to the Swedish Migration Agency.

Once the employer has completed their part of the application, the employee receives an email with a link to the application. The employee then completes their part of the application and submits it to the Swedish Migration Agency.

Extending a work permit

If you want to continue working in Sweden after your current work permit expires, you need to apply for an extension.

The employer starts the extension application by providing information about the employment in the Swedish Migration Agency's e-service. The employer also provides the relevant information about the terms and conditions of employment.

Once the employer has completed their part of the application, the employee receives an email with a link to the e-service. The employee then completes their part of the application, attaches the required documents and submits the application.

The application is not registered with the Swedish Migration Agency until the employee has completed and submitted their part of the application.

The application must be submitted before the current work permit expires.
